I Grew Up As Nikki. I Had to Discover Shanika.
Nikki was the name I grew up knowing.
My grandfather couldn’t pronounce Nika, so he called me Nikki. And so did everyone else. I didn’t even realize Shanika—the name on my birth certificate—was my real name until I was about four or five years old. Lol. And my peers didn’t know until about my Junior year in high school.
I didn’t know it then, but identity would become one of the biggest themes of my life.
For years, I knew how to be who I had been taught to be.
The harder journey was discovering who I actually was.
